trying in vain...
some of us are trying to think of some famous "latin(o)" mathematicians.

sorry, he was actually italian.
for amusement, try searching for 'famous [country of origin] mathematician'. compare results for japanese, french, german, indian, norwegian, british, [country in europe other than spain/portugal], mexican, etc. laugh really hard. bonus points if the famous latin mathematician actually came from a non-latin country.
also: the math history site has a page which lists the number of (quasi-famous) mathematicians from a given country.
